Taiwan has two kinds of notaries: the notary offices of the district courts (法院公證處) and licensed private notaries (民間公證人). They perform two different acts. Notarization (公證) records a legal act, such as a contract or a lease. Authentication (認證) confirms that a private document was signed by the right person, or that a copy matches its original.

Questions and answers
Do I need to come to your office from Taipei?
No. Clients in Taipei can send scans for a quote by email and courier originals to us. When a step requires you in person, such as signing before a notary, we arrange it within the jurisdiction of the Taipei District Court and Shilin District Court.
What is the difference between 公證 and 認證?
公證 (notarization) is used when the notary records a legal act, such as a contract. 認證 (authentication) is used when the notary confirms a signature on a private document, or that a copy matches its original. Most documents for use abroad need 認證.
Can a Taiwanese notary notarize a document in English?
Yes. Notaries in Taiwan can authenticate documents in foreign languages, but they generally require a Chinese translation or a bilingual document. We prepare that for you.
